Can I Buy the Abortion Pill Online?

WARNING: Do not risk your life by taking an abortion pill purchased online.

The idea of going to a clinic and waiting anxiously in an examination room for the pills you need to end your pregnancy seems less than ideal. If there was some way you could get started on solving this problem right now, you would do it. Remaining in the safety and privacy of your own home seems much more appealing. No one would ever have to know you are even pregnant!

You may be tempted to buy mifepristone and misoprostol online. While it is possible to get medical abortion pills over the internet, it is actually illegal to take them without the assistance of a qualified physician.1 According to the Federal Drug Administration, “You should not buy Mifeprex over the Internet because you will bypass important safeguards designed to protect your health (and the health of others). “2

In addition to the fact that the RU-486 sold online is not Federal Drug Administration-regulated, there can be considerable risk if your current medical condition is unknown. For example, if you have an undetected STD, there is a greater risk you could develop an infection or even die with a do-it-yourself abortion. As another example, if you have an ectopic pregnancy (undetectable with a home pregnancy test), taking the abortion pill can produce extreme complications or prove fatal. It is always recommended that you get a diagnostic screening to rule out an ectopic pregnancy for your safety before beginning the abortion pill. You may have additional medical issues that could impact your abortion which only a qualified healthcare provider can diagnose.

The bottom line is, be safe. While the privacy of a home abortion may seem more desirable than a visit to your doctor, it is not worth the risk. Protect your body and your future reproductive health.
